Our Approach to Learning

Our Approach to Learning

Students learn best in a positive learning environment. Learning continues when instruction is in a student’s best modality. Instruction begins at the student’s current academic level and continues in his/her best mode of learning.

Christian Education

Students of all faiths are welcome. Through daily prayer and daily devotions, students grow and know the life resource available through faith in God and the Bible. It is a desire that each student know the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Reading/Language Arts Education

Not all children learn in the same way. Students are provided opportunities to continue to improve their reading skills through a combination of programs and settings: daily reading, guided reading and kinesthetic learning strategies including the use of clay. The Davis Learning Strategies Program that has proven to positively impact reading, writing, and spelling is used every day. Informal reading inventories are used to determine levels of reading. Writing is taught as a practical/life skill.
Keyboarding skills are taught.

Math Education

Math–U-See curriculum provides a hands-on approach to learning for students to attain math skills on their individual level. Practical application of math skills is a priority.

Physical Education

Physical education is offered in a non-traditional program which accommodates individual students’ needs and abilities. Activities such as basketball, volleyball, stretching, hockey and appropriate game interactions are taught. This program benefits able bodied students as well as those with limitations. Personal fitness activities are emphasized.

Art Education

Art media are taught. Some may include stained glass, sculpture, pottery, and drawing as part of the arts education program. Guest artists from the community come periodically.

Skills for Success

Learning to take care of one self independently is part of the Achievers school philosophy. Meal preparation and pre-vocational skills are included in the life skills curriculum and field trips.

Social Studies/Science Education

Special research is done on a student’s appropriate level for certain units of study. Specialized curriculum that is high interest/low reading level for junior and senior high students is also utilized. Field trips in a city rich in history are part of this curriculum. UUMC has a van with a lift for students in wheelchairs.

Discipline Policy

Discipline is consistent and based on an understanding of the individual needs of each student. Our goal is to teach self-control and help students make good choices. Recognition for appropriate behavior is given. Guided direction is given when students are not able to make the right choices. Individual intervention plans will be developed if needed.
